Surprising Muscle- Building Foods. Consistency is the most important factor in achieving your ideal physique. In the gym, it's about finding a program that delivers the results you want, then having the discipline to stick with it to the end. In your diet, it's all about getting enough protein, controlling the amount and type of carbs you consume, and avoiding things like refined sugars and artificial ingredients. But there's no reason to feel confined to a world of chicken breasts and brown rice. NOW Foods offers the best selection of dietary supplements, vitamins and minerals. GoNutrition® is the UK's fastest growing sports nutrition brand and supplies the cheapest whey protein. Four favorite high-protein vegetarian/vegan alternatives to soy, and a protein-packed vegan recipe that combines all of them. RELATED: Is pea protein the new soy? We are just your average family of health seekers living as natural as possible life in this crazy modern world and wanting to share some nice and very cool products. Since 1968, NOW Foods has been dedicated to empowering healthier lives. Still a family-owned company today, the NOW Foods corporate facility in Bloomingdale, Illinois. A diagnosis of Fatty Liver Disease can be a real downer, but it may hearten you to know that there are steps you can take to reverse this condition. Among the best muscle- building foods are some you may never have heard of, and others you may simply have overlooked, unaware of their anabolic powers. Here are 1. 5 of the most unlikely muscle- building foods: Get your grocery list handy and prepare to add some variety to your diet en route to bigger gains. Mackerel. Mackerel comes from the same family as tuna but has a higher omega- 3 content, which helps limit the chronic inflammation generated by intense hypertrophy- based training. Mackerel contains a variety of other nutrients, including large amounts of zinc, which is essential for maintaining testosterone levels. A 2. 01. 1 study found that adding zinc to the diet of hard- training athletes increased testosterone levels following exhaustive exercise. And a 2. 00. 7 study on the hormonal effects of extra zinc found that it can also prevent the decrease of thyroid hormones that results from intense resistance training. Beets. The nitrates found naturally in beets increase vasodilation and improve performance. A recent study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that eating two medium- sized beets an hour and fifteen minutes prior to exercise improved performance, reduced the perceived level of exertion, and decreased the amount of oxygen that subjects' bodies needed to complete a workout. This . 3 Greek Yogurt. Greek yogurt is produced in part by straining excess liquid and carbohydrates from regular yogurt; the resulting concentrated product has twice the protein. Just check the ingredient list before you buy, though, as some companies like to cut corners by adding thickeners and gelling agents, such as pectin, in an effort to give inferior products that classic Greek yogurt taste and texture. The straining process used to create Greek yogurt results in a higher concentration of casein, a slower- digesting milk protein that provides the body with a steady increase in blood amino- acid levels. A 2. 01. 2 study published in Medicine and Science in Sports & Exercise showed that consuming casein before going to sleep provided an increase in blood amino- acid levels that was sustained throughout the night and yielded a 2. Depending on your calorie needs, you can use full- or reduced- fat Greek yogurt as part of your muscle- building efforts—but always reach for the plain version and avoid those with added fruit and sugar. Sardines. Tuna is popular for good reason, but when it comes to raw, muscle- building power, sardines are even better. Like tuna, sardines come canned and ready to eat; however, unlike tuna, which is most often packed in water or the less- than- appealing vegetable oil, sardines can be easily found in high- quality extra- virgin olive oil. Sardines also have 2. Moreover, four ounces of sardines pack 1. Omega- 3 fats, mostly known for their beneficial effects on heart health, also have anti- inflammatory properties and can help fight inflammation and joint pain associated with heavy, high- volume training. More important is their function in making leucine, an amino acid, more effective in its role as the catalyst for protein synthesis. Some research also suggests that omega- 3 fats can actually help older people overcome agerelated deficits in anabolism, making omega- 3s especially important for older lifters. Kimchi. The ability of kimchi, a traditional Korean dish consisting most commonly of fermented napa cabbage, onions, garlic, and spices, to improve your body composition has less to do with its scant calories than the way in which it affects other food you consume. Because kimchi is fermented, it contains beneficial bacteria that help with digestion and nutrient absorption. A 2. 01. 1 study published in Nutrition Research found that adding kimchi to subjects' diets for four weeks decreased waist size and body fat percentage while improving blood- sugar control. This makes kimchi a potential ally in warding off excessive fat gain during your mass- building cycles. The easiest way to include kimchi in your diet is to simply have it as a side dish with your meals. While you can find kimchi in the international section of most grocery stores, buy it from your local Asian market whenever possible—your dollar will go a lot further, allowing you to make kimchi a consistent part of your diet. Chocolate Milk. When you're out of protein powder, chocolate milk is your next best option after workouts. Chocolate milk naturally contains a blend of both fast- (whey) and slow- digesting (casein) proteins. The added sugars in the chocolate boost the total carbohydrate content of the drink, giving you more muscle- building calories and recovery- boosting carbs. Studies show that, compared with a traditional sports drink containing carbohydrates and electrolytes, chocolate milk is superior at resynthesizing muscle glycogen; stopping muscle breakdown through multiple channels; and kicking muscle growth into action by supporting muscle- protein synthesis at the molecular level. One additional anabolic advantage that chocolate milk holds over other post- workout drinks is the presence of antioxidants in cocoa that can help reduce the oxidative, stress- induced muscle damage that occurs after intense training, especially workouts that emphasize forced reps and negatives. Almonds. Almonds contain more protein and fiber than most nuts you'll find at the supermarket: One shot glass full of almonds contains 1. Almonds are also high in a naturally occurring type of vitamin E: alpha tocopherol, which is a more effective free- radical scavenger than the synthetic version found in most supplements. They also contain high levels of B vitamins—essential for energy metabolism—making them the perfect adjunct to any mass- gaining diet; research from City of Hope National Medical Center suggests that using almonds to increase calories over carbohydrates will yield better improvements in body composition. Vinegar. Shuttling nutrients toward your muscles and away from your fat cells is a key factor in developing a lean, muscular physique. Vinegar can help you do that. Animal studies show that the addition of vinegar to a high- carb meal causes more of those carbohydrates to be stored as muscle glycogen. The vinegar seems to act as a nutritional . In order to elicit the nutrient- partitioning effects of vinegar, you don't need much: Studies in humans show that the beneficial effects of vinegar on metabolism start to appear after just a two- teaspoon dose. Vinegar is the perfect addition to any salad, and goes well on green beans. Add vinegar to your first post- workout meal to maximize its glycogen- replenishing effects, then again at your last high- carb meal of the day so you'll benefit from the extra calories while still controlling insulin levels and the release of glucose into your body. Avocado. While avocados were once withheld from muscle- building diets due to their high fat content, we now know that they provide a unique combination of nutrients that makes them a near- perfect lean- mass builder. The average avocado contains 2. Research shows that substituting monounsaturated fat for saturated fat can shift fat gain away from the midsection. This will help keep your core looking and feeling tight during a mass phase, even if you gain some fat. Avocados can also improve the absorption of antioxidants known as carotenoids up to 1. Carotenoids are important nutrients for cell growth as well as for supporting a healthy immune system. Avocados are best eaten when they're slightly soft to the touch. If your avocado is ripening too fast, just put it in the refrigerator (if it's been cut open, drizzle the flesh with some lemon juice first) to stop the ripening process. Avocado can be eaten sliced in an omelet, mashed with salsa as guacamole, or with a spoon right out of the shell. Pea Protein. Whey and casein protein powders are popular because of their convenience, but also because of their high levels of essential and branched- chain amino acids. However, overuse of these proteins can actually lead to the development of a low- grade allergic response, so it's good to switch up your supplemental protein source every so often. Pea protein is highly digestible and, unlike many other vegetarian protein sources, does not contain any . In addition, pea protein contains all the essential amino acids, including high levels of branched- chain amino acids and glutamine, making it a true muscle- building powerhouse. Raspberries. Raspberries play several roles in building muscle. They improve digestive health so that the body is better able to extract all the nutrients from the food you're eating. They also contain the most fiber of any berry, packing up to 8 grams per cup. Maintaining a high- fiber diet as part of your hypertrophy plan is important—it . Research shows that antioxidants, like the anthocyanins found in raspberries, can boost your brain's sensitivity to leptin, an important hormone responsible for regulating your metabolic rate and insulin sensitivity. Kefir. Kefir is a cultured dairy product produced through the fermentation of the lactose found in completely lactose free, making it a viable beverage for people with lactose intolerance. Kefir also contains a unique mixture of probiotics and bioactive peptides that allow it to produce additional muscle- building benefits beyond those elicited by the 1. Is Hyaluronic Acid Injected Into Arthritic Hips? Intraarticular hyaluronic acid injections are one of the treatment options for knee osteoarthritis. What do we know about the effectiveness of hyaluronic acid for the hip? Have hyaluronic acid injections been studied for other joints or is it primarily used to treat knee osteoarthritis? Hyaluronic Acid Injections Are FDA- Approved for Knee Osteoarthritis but Not for Hips. Hyaluronic acid injections have been FDA approved for many years as a treatment for knee osteoarthritis. But hyaluronic acid has not been approved for hips or other joints. Nevertheless, some doctors have been using it off- label for hip injections for their patients. For example, Blue Cross/Blue Shield medical insurance considers intra- articular injections of it in any joint other than the knee to be investigational and not medically necessary. Researchers have studied the effectiveness of hyaluronic acid injections for the hip and the results were unimpressive. The American College of Rheumatology does not recommend using it for hip osteoarthritis. Injectable Hyaluronic Acid Drugs. There are several brands of injectable hyaluronic acid, with Synvisc being the one that was first approved. Euflexxa, Orthovisc, Hyalgan, and Supartz are others. Synvisc- One was approved on February 2. Synvisc, which requires a series of three injections. Hyaluronic Acid Ineffective for Hip Osteoarthritis. Hyaluronic acid aims to restore the normal properties of synovial fluid. It has also been suggested that hyaluronic acid may have a protective effect on cartilage, and may reduce the production and activity of chemicals involved in inflammation (such as proinflammatory mediators, matrix metalloproteinases). According to one study, a single injection of hyaluronic acid is not effective for hip osteoarthritis - - actually, no more effective than placebo. Because hyaluronic acid is rapidly cleared from joints, more than one injection could be needed to provide benefit. Rapid clearance of hyaluronic acid is just one theory of why multiple injections may produce a better result. An Introduction to the Leangains Diet and Workout Plan. Last updated on: 3- 3. Leangains is the coined diet and training methodology brainchild of Martin Berkhan, a professional fitness writer and consultant who blogs at Leangains. In the last five or so years, the branded moniker has grown from relative obscurity into something that’s become quite popular. This post is an introductory primer to Leangains written for beginners – for those who know little to nothing about it, but are interested in learning about it and deciding if it’s something worth trying.
2800 Calorie Bulking Diet Example MealsCheat Day or Cheat Meal? So you’re all excited about this cheat day. You’re dreaming of eating pizza, ice cream, chips, and fast food all day. Confused about how to lose fat? Learn the TRUTH about fat loss once and for all and start losing body fat today. The following is a 3000 calorie weight gain diet plan which is suitable for a 150 pound person who wants to go on a bulking up diet to gain 5-10lb of lean. How to Gain Weight As a Vegetarian. Vegetarians eat mostly vegetables, fruits, and grains, though some also eat dairy products and eggs. Since it has no meat, you. I’ll also share my personal opinion on things where it’s pertinent, insofar as the discussion relates to the straightforward bare effective minimum modus operandi of this blog. I’ve used Leangains myself and achieved great success with it, and Martin Berkhan is one of the few people in the industry whom I publicly endorse. Clickable Table of Contents by Section. Preliminary Section: My 1 Year Leangains Results – A Fat Loss Cut With Before and After Pictures. The initial burning question is, obviously, does Leangains actually work? And of course that’s fair to ask – there are too many branded health and fitness programs out there that are bogus. The answer is yes, it does. You can see some of Martin’s client results here. Leangains was also my set up of choice for losing fat. I don’t use the program anymore, but it certainly did work. I’ll let my progress pictures speak for themselves: The extended answer to the question, with a caveat, though, is that yes, Leangains does work, but that no, it’s not magic. 2800 Calorie Bulking Diet Example For Gestational DiabetesAt its core, like every other effective body composition improvement program out there (lose fat, gain muscle), Leangains works because it utilizes the fundamentals. If you’re hoping to have found an underground black book program that exceptionally enhances fat loss and/or muscle gain. Eating every 2- 3 hours and always being in a “fed” state was purportedly necessary to maximize metabolic rate, fat loss, and/or muscle gain. But, the major practical downside of the traditional bodybuilding style of dieting is that, one, it’s totally incongruent with convention, and two, it’s a rigid pain in the ass to adhere to, for many reasons. Martin’s negative experience with these issues was significant enough to compel him to question the dogma and eventually go on to create Leangains. The constant meal preparing, the obsessiveness about eating the perfect meals at the right time, and the way I sometimes made excuses not to participate in social gatherings in order to meet my calorie and macronutrient goals for the day. I’m sure some of the people reading this can relate. I wanted to stop this pattern cold turkey, so I started to question the need for regular feedings and the way it was constantly being pushed as the most optimal way to eat for physique conscious people. What’s more, and not mentioned therein, is that eating small/frequent meals like a bird and being halfway hungry all day long sucks for the big eaters out there like myself. Martin is one of the few people who can rightfully call himself a fitness industry disruptor because he, along with a few other notable individuals, scrutinized the actual pertinent science and showed that the restrictive small/frequent meal schedule, one of the most ironclad tenets in health and fitness culture, is totally unnecessary. You don’t need to eat breakfast first thing when you wake up. You don’t need to eat every three hours to stoke the metabolic fire and prevent “starvation mode.”You don’t need to dose protein every 2 hours or else face muscle wasting catabolic mayhem. You can eat big meals at night with a lot of carbs and still lose fat. Point Being – All in all, as long as your overall calories, nutrition, and training are on point over the long run, fat loss, muscle gain, and body composition improvement can and will work.* Further Reading: The Leangains methodology rejects the small/frequent meal ideology and concurrently utilizes a burgeoning style of dieting called intermittent fasting, which introduces a massive and much needed boon of dietary flexibility to the overly restrictive traditional bodybuilder’s diet. The reason Martin is a disruptor is that he was primarily responsible for spearheading intermittent fasting into bodybuilding culture. Section 2: What is Intermittent Fasting, Exactly? Intermittent Fasting (IF) has become a somewhat loose and informal term to describe various styles of fasting. The basic idea is that, in contrast to the traditional bodybuilding style of eating every 2- 3 hours, you fast and abstain from consuming calories for extended periods of time, usually anywhere from 1. It’s possible to fast for longer, but probably not ideal – I’ve never seen a program (in fitness at least) that calls for a fast longer than 3. Leangains uses a daily fast of around 1. It’s not technically intermittent in the literal sense of the word’s definition. An alternatively popular IF regimen is the Eat Stop Eat program by Brad Pilon, which uses one or two fasts during the week that last 2. Further Reading: The important point is this: By utilizing fasting strategically, it’s orders of magnitude easier to fit a bodybuilding diet into real day to day life – for many, it can make the difference between sustainable success and unsustainable and inevitable failure. Section 3: An Overview How Leangains Works. Leangains is a bodybuilding program. The purpose is body composition improvement – lose fat, gain muscle, and improve lean mass to fat mass ratio. Besides the use of intermittent fasting, Leangains is not actually much different than a regular run of the mill bodybuilding program: Primary training focus on lifting weights, done 3 (or so) times per week. Eating a diet with overall calorie and macronutrient (fat/protein/carb) targets, depending on whether your priority is fat loss or muscle gain. Cardio is done sparingly, and is secondary to the weight lifting. A daily fast of 1. Section 4: A Summary of The Leangains Diet Plan and Basic Leangains Macros. The Leangains diet is fairly similar to your standard carbohydrate cycling bodybuilding diet. There are no hard food restrictions – you can eat whatever you like, provided you hit your daily calorie and macronutrient targets, which is in fact the only hard restriction. Here are the distinguishing traits of a Leangains diet and macro ratios for fat loss (cutting) specifically: Eat (around) 3. Eat (around) maintenance calories on training days. Significantly higher carb, and lower fat on training days. Significantly lower carb, higher(ish) fat on off days. High protein intake on all days, to the tune of 1. For example, here were my calorie and macro targets for the first 8 months of my long cut: Training Days – 2. Off Days – 1. 50. It’s essentially a rotating cut/refeed cycle that lines up with your training. If you’re bulking, not much changes except that you increase your calories across the board. For me, those macros might look something like: Training Days – 2. Off Days – 2. 40. There have been a lot of wild claims regarding intermittent fasting from those riding the faddish coattails, but understand that intermittent fasting doesn’t confer any magic – it merely makes adhering to one’s calorie and macro targets easier to do, both from a standpoint of hunger and of practicality. The reason Leangains works is the same reason any effective bodybuilding program works – you hit the appropriate calorie and macro targets, and you train. Understand: If you want to lose fat, you have to create a running calorie deficit, no matter what, and there’s little to nothing else beyond that which you can do to exceptionally expedite fat loss. That’s the unsexy truth.* Further Reading: Section 5: A Summary of The Leangains Workout Plan. Though Martin doesn’t outline an explicit protocol on his site – those are reserved for his private clients on a case by case basis presumably – he does offer rough guidelines: Minimalist focus on the compound and power lifts: squats, deadlift, bench press, shoulder press, pulls/chins, and other accessories as needed. Low rep and heavy weight ranges. Reverse pyramid for 2- 3 sets – 1st set to near failure, 2nd set is slightly lighter and also to near failure, ect. Default recommendation is three 4. Here is my program that I used for around 8 months: Day 1 (lift: sets x reps)Day 2. Day 3. Squats: 2 x 5- 7. Inc DB Press: 2 x 5- 7. Deadlifts: 2 x 3- 5. Bench Press: 2 x 5- 7. Rows: 2 x 5- 7 Shoulder Press: 2 x 5- 7. Curls: 2 x 5- 7. Weighted Dips: 2 x 5- 7 Weighted Chin Ups: 2 x 5- 7(Optional) Box Jumps/Cleans: 2 x 5- 7. Here is another 3 day/week program sourced from an actual former client of Berkhan’s who did an “ask me anything” thread on Reddit. Day 1 (lift: sets x rep range)Day 2 (lift: sets x rep range)Day 3 (lift: sets x rep range)Deadlift: 2 x 3- 5. Bench Press: 2 x 6- 8. Squats: 2 x 6- 8. Shoulder Press: 2 x 6- 8. Incline DB Press: 2 x 6- 8. Hamstring Curls: 2 x 6- 8. Weighted Chin Ups: 2 x 4- 6. Barbell Curls: 2 x 6- 8. Leg Extensions: 2 x 6- 8. Rows: 2 x 6- 8. Tricep Extentions: 2 x 6- 8. Calve Raises: 1 x 1. Close Grip Chins: 1 x 6- 1. Leangains training is, essentially, heavy power lifting oriented programming. Section 6: Putting It Together – The Leangains Schedule. The only significant decision, really, is whether or not you want to train fasted. Practically speaking, it will most likely depend on your personal preferences and schedule. I personally like to break the fast with a small meal before I train, but I’ve trained fasted plenty of times and have felt perfectly fine. Martin recommends BCAA supplementation if you do train fasted. Section 7: Is Leangains Right for You? Though Martin is inarguably an innovator and a disruptor in the world of health and fitness – the small frequent meal myth seriously needs to die already – Leangains, in all honesty, is nothing remarkable in and of itself. I will be updating my resume very soon, February 2. Researcher, June - October 2. Independence and separatist movements can be found in virtually every country in the world. Some of them are well- known. For instance, the Tamils in Sri Lanka, the Corsican movement in France, and the Basques and Catalans in Spain. These are all well- documented and researched. In Columbia, there is the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia or Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), and in Indonesia there are the Aceh and Maluku movements. In North America, the Cascadia movement calls for an independent nation made up of British Columbia, Oregon, and Washington. Even Western Kansas wants to separate, not to mention Quebec, Canada. In Somalia, there are independence movements in Puntland and Somaliland. Relatively quiet African countries like Senegal also have low grade conflict. The Casamance region of the country is home to the Jola people who have a long tradition of peaceful independence demonstrations. My job is to research more than two hundred independence and separatist movements, dividing them into two parts: serious movements (which is most of them), and the not- so- serious ones. I am expected to provide background historical information for each, an account of why a particular movement wants independence, and a snapshot of their web presence. Measles, Mumps, and Rubella -- Vaccine Use and Strategies for Elimination of Measles, Rubella, and Congenital Rubella Syndrome and Control of Mumps: Recommendations. What types of information do these movements have posted on the Internet? What are other organizations, countries, and governments saying about them on the Internet? Fact Checker and Researcher for a New York Publishing House, May - June 2. The encyclopedia I am working on is a two- volume A- Z reference work that will examine the dramatic events, domestic and foreign issues, public policies, and everyday concerns that have shaped the evolution and nature of America's policies on national security, national defence, constitutional rights, and public safety. Interdisciplinary in approach, the articles examine numerous facets of recent history in order to equip readers and researchers with a working and accurate vocabulary to examine present- day issues and understand ongoing discussions of future concern. This is being written primarily for use by students and general readers. I am one of a team of researchers and writers, who are working together to write and fact check the manuscript. We have access to multiple databases and also use the Internet for some of the work. Researcher, Writer, and Editor, May - June 2. A medical researcher hired me to help him research, write, and edit an extensive paper on the Human Growth Hormone (HGH) and how and why it promotes fat loss in adults. Fact Checker and Researcher for an Upcoming Book on Inspirational Quotes, May - June 2. My job was to validate and correct hundreds of quotes and delete any redundant ones. I had to confirm the language and make sure that the punctuation was accurate. I also had to find a context/source for each quote. This is an example of a job that takes much longer than you think it will. I ran into a lot of problems with that one. Finally, I spoke to one of the archivists working on The Mark Twain Papers project at Berkeley and she told me that it wasn't one of Twain's after all. Many of the quotes were very problematic. For this project, I used multiple sources to fact check the quotes, including Google Books. Researcher for an Innovative Engineering Solutions Company, May 2. I was hired to do some exploratory research on the following three concepts to find out if they have technical merit and/or are feasible technologies to pursue: using social marketing to disseminate evidence- based energy balance intervention; portable e- technology tools for real- time energy balance research; and innovative technologies for enhancing function for individuals with disabilities. I was also asked to come up with a suggestion for how each of these concepts would make them commercially viable. Researcher for an American Charity, May 2. I was hired to create individual prospect research profiles for both existing and prospective donors. The work will continue on a quarterly basis throughout the next year. When the profiles are loaded into specialized databases, my clients will be able to identify which prospects should be invited to their annual events and which donors they should contact to participate in special sponsor tours and projects instead of contacting everyone for every event. For example, a person who has donated only when a natural disaster has taken place probably wouldn't be interested in being continually contacted to donate to other types of campaigns. You don't want to overwhelm your donors. Rather, you want to create long- term relationships with them. The profiles will go a long way in making this happen. Researcher for a Management Consultancy, Victoria, Australia, April - May 2. The company that hired me was designing a leadership program for a government agency using the tenets of a learning organization. The agency was facing a number of organizational and operational challenges as a result of an increasingly competitive market and a change in business objectives. As a result, they recognized that in order to meet its near and long- term goals and overcome its challenges, they would need to strengthen its leadership capacity and create a much healthier workplace by designing work environments that are open to creative thought by breaking down hierarchies and shifting away from the traditional authoritarian workplace. My role was to provide the stakeholders with information on learning organizations and summarize my research in a comprehensive report and teaching tool. Survey Writer for a Berkeley, CA Research Group, April 2. A research consultancy hired me to help them write a survey that focused on the state of entrepreneurship in Africa and Western Europe. Ultimately, my clients were looking for insight into the economic future of particularly important regions in the area. A large number of surveys were sent out to a variety of grassroots organizations. We received a very good response. Researcher for a Montreal- based Lifestyle Television Company, April 2. My role was to help a member of the production team with the research for a strategic plan. Fact Checker for an Educational Publisher in South Carolina, April 2. A publisher of non- fiction books for middle and high school readers contacted me to fact check a biography of Alexander the Great for accuracy. Researcher for a Washington Technology Consultancy, March - May 2. I was asked to help with the research for a white paper on the use of cloud computing in federal government agencies. Many federal agencies are evaluating and implementing cloud computing. As agencies take on this transformative technology, they find the transition to cloud computing impacts many aspects of their IT environment, including legacy systems, the sustainability of infrastructure, security, and privacy. Cloud computing can have a very high return on investment, but it does bring additional risks that must be managed. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) finds cloud computing solutions share five characteristics: on- demand self- service; broad network access; resource pooling; rapid elasticity; and measured service. Cloud vendors are able to provide on- demand scalability at reduced costs because their infrastructure is streamlined and they take advantage of massive economies of scale. For many organizations, cloud computing is much more cost effective than providing the capabilities themselves, but should the government be using it for sensitive information? Should they be uploading personal information onto third- party servers? Security is cited as a leading concern for those considering cloud computing. One of the main problems is that agencies cannot easily find out who has accessed the data or even find out how it is archived. Should the government exchange in- house developed systems for vendor managed off- site systems and software platforms? Many critics contend that because of the uncertainties involved with cloud computing, the risks outweigh the rewards, especially since the overall costs and reliability factors are difficult to determine. Survey Writer and Researcher for an Educational Association, March - May 2. I helped to create a questionnaire and a survey study that was designed to help analyze how undergraduate students view plagiarism and academic dishonesty. Students from 7. 7 selected American universities were a part of the study. Academic pressure was the number one reason given by students who copy material for essays from the Internet. Students were also asked whether library staff included the concept of plagiarism as part of their information literacy classes. My clients are hoping they can map out profiles of students likely to plagiarize and bring more awareness to the problem. Preliminary results will be made available as soon as the summary report is compiled. Researcher for a UK Charity, March 2. I worked with a small charity in Oxford to research and write case studies for lesson plan supplementation that will be used to educate college and university students on major global issues such as climate change, modern slavery, food safety, human rights, and the privatization of water. The project was developed to engage hard- to- reach young people in global issues. Researcher for an Advocacy Institute, March 2. The history of international humanitarian aid before the 2. Weight Loss Prior to Procedure: 2. Marital Status: Dating. Career: Paralegal. Residence: Chicago, Illinois. Doctor: Dr. Loren Schechter, www. I wanted to improve the appearance of loose skin and tissue on my chest and abdomen that resulted from my weight loss. I found that prior to the body contouring procedure my day to day life was still inhibited by my problem with weight. When I would do chest lifts at the gym, I would move my arms up, but my body would sag down. In fact, I still felt conscientious about the appearance of my body before the body contouring procedure. After the procedure, not only did I lose 1. I experienced the aesthetic benefits which made me feel more confident in my daily life. Today, I maintain a balanced diet and comfortably exercise every other day. Furthermore, the gastric bypass procedure forced me to change my eating habits. I can no longer tolerate greasy, heavily processed foods or concentrated sugars. Each time I eat something intolerable, my body reacts and serves as a reminder of what I should not be eating. In the end, the gastric bypass and body contouring procedure changed many aspects of my life. The best advice that I could give to a patient interested in body contouring is to research the doctor. Just because a doctor advertises the procedure or appears on television about body contouring, doesn't mean that the doctor has extensive training or expertise with the procedure. Be certain to ask your bariatric surgeon or support group for referrals. Richard Tholen, Minneapolis, Minnesota, www. In November of 2. I wanted to change my breast implants from saline to silicone in order to have a better texture and feel. I also wanted to have a belt lift so that I would have less dimpling on my skin. I did not mind proceeding with the implant change because Dr. Tholen could go into the same incision location. And despite the long recovery associated with a belt lift (I had tubes for six weeks), I felt the belt lift would make a difference in my life. In August of 2. 00. I had a third surgery including, revision surgery for my thigh and liposuction for my outer thighs and inner knees. I decided to proceed with this because these areas had decreased more over the year and I knew I would not be able to change these areas on my own. The lift procedures are associated with higher complication rates than some other procedures. Though, since I am a nurse, I understand that complications can irrupt and be resolved. Even though complications may mean longer recovery periods, the benefits of the procedures out weighted the risks for me. I simply planned appropriately should the need arise. I did have the complication of an infection. However, the infection subsided and I was able to return to normal activities without having to cancel planned activities. Even though I missed a significant amount of time from work throughout the procedures, my employer understood. My employer paid for my short term disability needed to be absent from work, but I was not compensated for the actual cost of the procedures, which was over $2. The payoff has definitely out- weighed the cost though and I would do it again in a heart beat. I would also suggest that you pace yourself and have help to support you with daily activities throughout recovery. Complications can arise from overexertion. Yet, do not fear the procedure because there is a risk of complications. In the past, I was avoiding activities because of the appearance of my skin. Now, I enjoy my life fully and the procedures helped to make this happen. |
